Abstract

Purpose

Knowledge discovery in databases (KDD) is a tedious and repetitive process. A challenge for the effective use of KDD is understanding and confirming its results derived from the harmonized process. To exploit the advantages of agents’ application, this paper aims to propose a conceptual model based on a multi-agent system (MAS) to control each step of the KDD process.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper reports the empirical findings of a survey conducted among academic and industrial sectors in Tehran, Iran. In this survey, the participants answered a questionnaire about the main factors of designing a suitable model for the KDD process based on MAS. The factor analysis reveals important insights of previous models developed by various researchers.

Findings

This research uses the survey results to find six critical success factors, continuity in refinement and improvement; learning and acting concurrently; loosely or tightly coupled approach for using technologies; cooperative, dynamic and flexible environment; documentation and reporting; and extracting and evaluating knowledge intelligently, for a proper conceptual model of the KDD process based on MAS.

Research limitations/implications

The proposed model reflects all aspects of the KDD process by applying the intelligent agents for each process steps. In addition, this research only considers the Iran society; hence, it cannot be generalized to other nations, and it may need further research in other countries and to be implemented in real-world business domains.

Originality/value

This research helps organizations to adopt a proposed model and implement a KDD process to advantage the valuable knowledge that exists in their data resources.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to propose an approach that integrates three complementary perspectives, multi-agent systems, fuzzy logic and case-based reasoning. Unsatisfied customers, information overload and high uncertainty are the main challenges that are faced by today’s supply chains. In addition, a few existing agent-based approaches are tied to real-world supply chain functions like supplier selection. These approaches are static and do not adequately take the qualitative and quantitative factors into consideration. Therefore, an agent-based framework is needed to address these issues.

Design/methodology/approach

The proposed approach integrates three complementary perspectives, multi-agent systems, fuzzy logic and case-based reasoning, as a common framework. These perspectives were rarely used together as a common framework in previous studies. Furthermore, an exploratory case study in an office furniture company is undertaken to illustrate the value of the framework.

Findings

The proposed agent-based framework evaluates supply offers based on customers’ preferences, recommends alternative products in the case of stock-out and provides a collaborative environment among agents who represent different supply chain entities. The proposed fuzzy case-based reasoning (F-CBR) approach reduces the information overload by organizing them into the relevant cases that causes less overall search between cases. In addition, its fuzzy aspect addresses the high uncertainty of supply chains, especially when there are different customers’ orders with different preferences.

Research limitations/implications

The present study does not include the functions of inventory management and negotiation between agents. Furthermore, only the case description and case retrieval phases of the case-based reasoning approach are investigated, and the remaining phases like case retaining, case reusing and case revising are not included in the scope of this paper.

Originality/value

This framework balances the interests of different supply chain structural elements where each of them is represented by a specific agent for better collaboration, decision-making and problem-solving in a multi-agent environment. In addition, the supplier selection and order gathering mechanisms are developed based on customers’ orders.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to explore the contextual dimensions of organizations for finding the interactions between of these dimensions and knowledge management (KM) and to identify the critical success factors, drivers and constraints, relevant to the implementation of KM in the Tehran business environment. The most research of KM merely pays attention to its relation with dimensions of the organizations especially contextual dimensions.

Design/methodology/approach

A new exploration based on research experiences of the KM is formalized as an extension of the model by Daft. The present article reports the empirical findings of a survey conducted among managers and experts in Tehran. In this survey we give them a questionnaire that contains some questions related to the mentioned dimensions and asked about relations of them and KM critical success factors for better implementation based on factor analysis. The questionnaire reflects insights gained from a mix of individual choice models developed by various researchers and Delphi technique.

Findings

This research finds seven critical success factors, Collaboration and knowledge workers, Technology Deployment, Learning Culture, Flat Structures, Supply Chain Integration, Comprehensive strategies and Flexible Organizations, which related to the conceptual Dimensions of organizations and also drivers and constraints of KM implementation.

Research limitations/implications

This framework reflects the interactions between contextual dimensions and KM. It may need further research to be used for structural dimensions of the organizations.

Originality/value

Using this research, organizations interested in implementing KM may be familiar with the impacts of KM implementation and contextual dimensions on each other for achieving the desirable outcomes.

Abstract

Purpose

Data envelopment analysis (DEA) is a significant method for measuring the relative efficiency of decision making units (DMUs) that use the least inputs, produce the most desirable outputs and emit the least undesirable outputs in order to maximize their profits. In DEA, detecting an optimal scale size (OSS) is also vital and could be more applicable in economic activities when there are integer and undesirable measures. The purpose of this research is to measure average-profit efficiency (APE) and OSSs with integer data and undesirable outputs.

Design/methodology/approach

This study presents an alternative concept of APE using the concepts of most productive scale size (MPSS), profit efficiency and scales, containing desirable and undesirable outputs along with integer and non-integer measures. In fact, the OSS minimizes APE as the optimal scale, which is the ratio of the profit efficiency to the radial average output. Considering the prices of the inputs and desirable outputs, as well as the lack of any specific weight for the undesirable outputs, a two-step model for the numerical calculation of OSS is presented. In addition, the proposed approach is applied to a real data set of Iranian gas companies while there are integer measures and undesirable outputs.

Findings

The results show the introduced approach is beneficial to estimate OSSs from the aspect of maximizing profits of firms with undesirable outputs and integer values.

Originality/value

Estimating OSSs is the significant issue for managers, but its investigation in the presence of integer measures and undesirable outputs is presently under-considered.

Abstract

Purpose

Assessing inputs and outputs is a significant aspect of taking decisions while there are complex and multistage processes in many examinations. Due to the presence of interval performance measures in various real-world studies, the purpose of this study is to address the changes of interval inputs of two-stage processes for the perturbations of interval outputs of two-stage systems, given that the overall efficiency scores are maintained.

Design/methodology/approach

Actually, an interval inverse two-stage data envelopment analysis (DEA) model is proposed to plan resources. To illustrate, an interval two-stage network DEA model with external interval inputs and outputs and also its inverse problem are suggested to estimate the upper and lower bounds of the entire efficiency and the stages efficiency along with the variations of interval inputs.

Findings

An example from the literature and a real case study of the banking industry are applied to demonstrate the introduced approach. The results show the proposed approach is suitable to estimate the resources of two-stage systems when interval measures are presented.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, there is no study to estimate the fluctuation of imprecise inputs related to network structures for the changes of imprecise outputs while the interval efficiency of network processes is maintained. Accordingly, this paper considers the resource planning problem when there are imprecise and interval measures in two-stage networks.

This work aims to focus on the study of natural convection heat transfer characteristics in a vertical wall embedded in a non-Darcy porous medium filled with nanofluids.

Design/methodology/approach

The governed partial differential equations are transformed into ordinary differential equations which are obtained by similarity solution and then have been solved through homotopy analysis method.

Findings

The results show that Cu-water as nanofluid enhances the local Nusselt number more than other nanofluids.

Originality/value

Nanoparticles and nanofluid enhance the local Nusselt number.

Abstract

Purpose

As returns to scale (RTS) describes the long run connection of the changes of outputs relative to increases in the inputs, the purpose of this study is to answer the following questions: If the proportionate changes exist in the inputs, what is the rate of changes in outputs with respect to the inputs’ variations in the two-stage networks over the long term? How can the authors investigate quantitative RTS in the two-stage networks? In other words, the purpose of this research is to introduce a different approach to estimate the performance, RTS and scale economies (SE) in network structures.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper proposes a novel non-radial approach based on data envelopment analysis to analyze the performance and to investigate RTS and SE in two-stage processes.

Findings

The findings show that the range adjusted measure (RAM)/RTS approach can identify reference sets for overall systems and each stage. In addition, the models presented in this paper can classify decision-making units and determine the increasing/decreasing trends of RTS.

Originality/value

The majority of previous RTS studies have been examined in black-box structures and have been discussed in a radial framework. Therefore, in this study, RTS and SE in the two-stage networks are dealt with using an extended RAM approach. Actually, the efficiency and RTS for each stage and the overall model are calculated using the proposed technique.
